Marianne Elizabeth Brett (nee Thompson)

Passed away peacefully in her 100th year, at Riverside Glen, Guelph, ON on July 17th. Marianne was born in Hamilton, ON Sept. 15, 1917 to the late Reverend Michael Taylor Griffin Thompson and Ada Ethel Nixon Thompson. She was predeceased in 2003 by her beloved husband and son, Reginald (Fred) Frederick Woodman Brett, and Frederick (Rick) Griffin Brett, respectively.

Marianne is the adored mother of Wendy A. E. Brett (Jeff Wilson) and beloved grandmother of Christopher and Meredith Wilson. She will be also be missed by her loving friend and sister-in-law Mrs. Berti Blakley, and many nieces and nephews from the Brett and Blakley clan.

She graduated at a young age with a B.A. from McMaster University, and met her future husband Fred at the University of Toronto after completing her Master of Library Science. She worked at the U. of T. library, went on to the East York General Hospital library, and then established the medical library at NYGH where she worked until her retirement, while raising her children and enjoying summer time at Lyderhorn cottage.

Marianne was always active in the church, particularly at St. Christopher-on-the-Heights, and St. Simon-the-Apostle Anglican Church (Toronto). Dear friends were Rev. Canon David (and Dixie) Crane, and Rev. Canon Robert Clubbe.

Marianne was deeply devoted to her family, and supported both Rick and Wendy in all their endeavours. In her later years, her dry wit and affection was much appreciated at Riverside Glen Retirement Home.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Ellen Lee, and all of Marianne’s amazing caregivers at Riverside Glen: Heath, Daniel, Laura, Marissa, Lori, Resa, and all the rest at Riverside Glen for their kind and compassionate care.

A funeral service will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, 99 Woolwich St., Guelph, on Thursday July 27 at 11:30a.m. A reception will follow at the church, then interment at 2:30 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, Georgetown. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Scott Mission, Toronto or a charity of your choice.
